Behind the name

The meaning behind the name Egg Canvas comes from dalgyal, which means egg in Korean. It is a nickname from childhood, for her face shape resembles one of an egg. Egg and Canvas work together as a metaphor for life, as life is about creation and a blank canvas that can be dreamt up and painted anew everyday.

FAQs

  • I’ve acquired the Leica Q3 most recently, but I’ve been using the Sony a7R III since 2017. For the Sony, my favorite daily lens is the 24mm f/1.8. It’s slightly wide and does nicely in low-light situations. 35mm f/2.8 is also very compact and great for daily street photography. 20mm f/1.8 is best for interiors and wide shots (like 0.5 on iPhone!). Outfits and portraits with a creamy bokeh are shot with a 55mm f/1.8 or 85mm f/1.4 GM. I like to bring a 24-70mm f/2.8 GM for travel as it is the most versatile zoom lens; however, it gets quite heavy. For casual trips, the Sony DSC-RX100 VII is super convenient to pop into your pocket or bag.

  • I use Adobe Lightroom Classic to edit the photos from my camera, and VSCO to edit photos on my iPhone. TouchRetouch is also a very handy app!

  • I was born in Busan, South Korea, and immigrated to the United States with my parents when I was 2 years old. I grew up in New Jersey and moved to New York City after graduating from RISD in 2009. I’m proud to say I’m officially a New Yorker!

  • Hoon and I got married at City Hall in April 2012 and held our wedding celebration in September of the same year. Our reception took place at Jungsik in TriBeCa, the only Korean restaurant with two Michelin stars in the world at that time. It was especially meaningful to us because Hoon’s company, Why Not Smile, handled the branding, photography, and interiors for the restaurant. Our official wedding ceremony was held a week later in Korea at Hoon's alma mater, Seoul National University. The day after the ceremony, we left for Bora Bora. Everything went by in a whirlwind, but every moment was incredibly special.

  • I've always struggled with balance and likely will for the rest of my life. It's a constant work in progress, especially in a city like New York. I built Superegg to help people like myself seek more balance through daily self-rituals and physical, mental, and emotional caring for oneself. I love taking small moments out of the day to relish that time for myself. An hour-long Pilates or yoga class, reading a chapter in a book, or listening to my favorite song while enjoying a face mask are small moments you can dedicate to yourself that will add up in the long run. Sending you all strength and love.
